Improvements in Gold Nanorod Biocompatibility with Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Stabilization

Due to their well-defined plasmonic properties, gold nanorods (GNRs) can be fabricated with optimal light absorption in the near-infrared region of electromagnetic spectrum, which make them suitable for cancer-related theranostic applications. However, controversial safety profile, as a result surfactant stabilization during synthesis, limits clinical translation. We report facile method improve GNR biocompatibility through presence sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). GNRs (120 × 40 nm) were synthesized seed-mediated approach, using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) cationic direct growth and stabilize particles. Post-synthesis, SDS was used an exchange ligand modify net surface charge particles from positive negative while maintaining rod stability aqueous environment. cytotoxic effects, well mechanisms cellular uptake, examined two different cancer cell lines, Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) HeLa cells. not only found significant dose-dependent effect treatment on viability but also time-dependent cytotoxicity over lines. Our results promote better understanding how we mediate undesired consequences synthesis byproducts when exposed living organism, so far has limited use theranostics.
